During a cleanse, Ayurvedic body treatments can enhance the experience by stimulating the body’s immunity and releasing ama (stored toxins). These treatments are rituals to support you on emotional, physical, and spiritual levels. In the framework of Ayurveda, bodywork and massage is used as a way to rejuvenate and detoxify the body, and can have specific benefits to balance one’s dosha. Here we will take a look at the treatments offered through our partner Ambika Therapies.
According to Erika at Ambika Therapies in Breckenridge, Colorado:
Abhyanga is a rhythmic massage performed by one or two therapists in tandem. It involves medicated herbal oils and long strokes to flush the lymphatic fluid and also clear the pranic (energetic) pathways.
Shirodhara is a warm oil treatment for the scalp and hair. A steady stream of organic oil is poured over the forehead, specifically over the third eye chakra to balance the nervous system. It is deeply relaxing and recommended for vata imbalance.
Swedana is a steam where an herbal steam bath is enveloped over the body. It opens pores, clears congestion, and increases circulation to the muscles and organs.
Pinda swedana is a specific application of herbal steam using poultices filled with rice and herbs. It opens pranic pathways and is used to relieve pain in muscles and joints.
Udvartana is an herbal exfoliation where herbs are vigorously scrubbed over the body. Like the abhyanga, medicated herbal oils are used along with strokes to flush the lymphatic fluid. This is recommended for kapha imbalance.
Indian head/foot massage are treatments that activate the marma (energy points) in the head, scalp, and neck and on the hands and feet. These points reflexively relax the entire body and address head and neck tension.
The treatments are performed by certified massage therapists who hold a pure intention of assisting in the client's growth and well-being. The environment is kept sattvic (pure) using natural herbal medicinal oils, high quality essential oils, and organic herbs. The treatments are both luxurious and therapeutic, and are intended to remind you of your body's own inner wisdom.
